The crucial role of training in innovative agriculture, supported by a scientific board of excellence

Research and Innovation

Open Science and digital technologies: from the lab to the fields

Agronomic expertise combined with R&D expertise enables the development and application of solutions that meet the diverse needs of innovative agriculture, the implementation of infrastructure, and the integration of technologies in a single experimental facility.

R&D activities are supported by a scientific board composed of leading national and international universities and research centers.

Crop Science

Digital Agronomy and Crop Science lab (DACS) is focused on increasing knowledge of soil fertility and understanding the processes of response to abiotic stress in crops, in order to support efficient decisions and solutions for sustainable agronomic management.

The study of the spatial variability of the soil and the early detection and accurate processing of data coming from advanced satellite and proximity sensing systems (UAV) represent priority objectives for defining robust interpretative and decision-making models which currently hinder widespread adoption by part of specialized farmers in Italy and abroad. Our program is designed to provide accurate information to advanced agricultural technical assistance services, to integrate advanced technology systems (AI, ML and others) and improved agronomic practices. We disseminate this knowledge through various channels, including interviews, social media, conferences, workshops, summer and winter schools, field days.

Agrophysics

How Nitrogen is stored and transported in plant cultivated? How biofertilizers act on crops? How stress acts on cultivated plants metabolism and resilience? We study the physics at different level from plant to cropping systems and soil, from basic hydrodynamic and biophysical principles, to the realization of new imaging detectors and systems as Positron Emission Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the detection and measurement, in open field, of new crop functional processes.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence offers innovative solutions to improve productivity, sustainability and crop resiliency. BF Educational specialists develop advanced algorithm of machine learning and data analysis, enabling farmers to optimize decisions (DSS), such as watering and fertilization management, the forecasting yeld and the early plant deseases diagnosis.

Furthermore, IA equipped drones can monitor field from top, collecting detailed data about the health of plants and identifying promptly problems like the lack of nutrients or the presence of parasites.
